On this, the 20th Anniversary of Fantasy Island Amusement Park, the owners give a gift
to the families who have made Long Beach Island their Fantasy Island each summer.
As a tribute to every person who has ever made Fantasy Island Amusement Park part of
their summer memories, a very unique new children’s charity book has been
commissioned by the park’s owners - Our Fantasy Island. An “interactive” day trip
book.
Former Long Beach Island resident Lisa Suhay, now living in Norfolk. Virginia with her
husband and four sons, was commissioned for this work, which is the second in a trilogy
that finds the magic in waterside towns and gives proceeds to local charities. The first
book was “There Goes a Mermaid! A NorFolktale.” sponsored by The Virginian-Pilot
Newspaper and has raised over $30,000 for the Literacy Partnership & The Joy Fund.
Our Fantasy Island, gives to the Ocean County Library System’s Children’s services
division.
In Our Fantasy Island, amusement park ride tokens from a bygone summer hold the
magic to transform the Island the children see into a magical learning adventure. While
the parents see the usual sights, the children bring “Old Barney” the Barnegat Lighthouse
to life, eat pizza with Surf City’s Tiki Surfers and ride a live Sea Dragon while learning
about the navigational markers in the Barnegat Bay.
Boldface type in the book serves as a cue for fun facts about the area that lead to a quiz in
the back of the book.
Q: What do dunes do in the winter?
A: Protect homes from winter storms.
The book doubles as a scrapbook and journal. Throughout the book children find they
can “talk back to the pages” by keeping a journal of their day, attaching their favorite
photos to the pages and keeping notes on various aspects of a day trip to Long Beach
Island. |
